Phoebe Dynevor: ‘It’s not a good time for actresses my age’

From fronting Bridgerton to starring in a finance psychodrama, Hollywood’s new English muse Phoebe Dynevor is dominating our screens – but she’s concerned with the lack of roles for young women

What evenwas that?!” Phoebe Dynevor is laughing, still incredulous four years after her turn as Daphne Bridgerton thrust her headfirst into turbo fame. “I bumped into Regé [-Jean Page] on the red carpet the other day and we were both like, ‘But seriously what was that!?’ I’m still just coming down from it. Shooting season one of Bridgerton was probably the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

Today she is a long way from the Ton, Zooming me from the wealthy Hollywood Hills enclave of Brentwood, LA. She has dialled in to talk about how she traded her Bridgerton bustles for a something altogether more suited and booted as Emily, the lead protagonist in the erotic finance industry thriller, Fair Play.

The film is set in the corporate offices of One Crest, a New York-based hedge fund, and Dynevor plays a twentysomething professional navigating the cutthroat world of money, sex and Gordon Gekko wannabes.

We meet Emily and boyfriend Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) in the bathroom of a wedding party where the couple have slipped away for a shag in the toilets. He is on his knees, and rises from the tiled floor with blood all over his mouth. The scene portrays Luke as a modern man, one who baulks neither at menses nor kneeling at the feet of a woman, yet when girlfriend Emily gets promoted over him at their place of work, juicy themes of male narcissism and misogyny rear up.

“He’s not hiding any of the murky bits of being a man, he really puts it out there,” says Dynevor of co-star Ehrenreich’s performance. “I remember watching him, and having to try and stay in the scene, because his performance was so nuanced, and really a thrill to watch.”

Emily was a role that Dynevor says she begged director Chloe Domont to let her play – but there was no need to. “When I met Phoebe for the first time, I had this immediate gut reaction that she was my Emily,” says Domont. “From her talent in previous work to our conversations about the character, and, most importantly, her excitement to go on this psychotic rollercoaster of a story gave me complete confidence.”

Phoebe Dynevor: ‘I’d like to apologise to my flatmate. I keep shrinking his sweaters in the wash’

Born in Greater Manchester, Phoebe Dynevor, 28, landed a role in the BBC drama Waterloo Road in 2009, at the age of 14. She appeared in period dramas The Village (2014) and Dickensian (2015) before being cast in the American series Younger and moving to the US. She returned to the UK to play the female lead in Bridgerton. Her films include The Colour Room, Bank of Dave and Fair Play. Her next project is the upcoming spy thriller Inheritance, and she is one of Bafta’s EE rising star nominees for 2024. She lives in London.

Which living person do you most admire, and why?
My mum [the actor, Sally Dynevor] in so many ways. She is the real definition of a superwoman to me.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
I wish I could be more patient. I always want things to get done or happen now.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
When I was 17, my friends and I threw a fashion show for a breast cancer charity. Breast cancer is something my mum went through when I was 14, so prevention is very close to my heart. Our singer, who was performing during the fashion show, dropped out at the last minute so I had to step in. It’s on video, and my sister always brings it up.

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Working as a waitress in a cocktail bar in Shoreditch, London.

If not yourself, who would you most like to be?
Taylor Swift.

What is your most treasured possession?
I have a little drawing that my grandma, my dad’s mum, drew of me. She passed away last year and it’s on my bedside table. She was an actor and then later in life she painted, so I have lots of lovely watercolours of hers in my house, which I treasure.

All Eyes Are On Phoebe Dynevor

The Bridgerton breakout now has a BAFTA nomination for her punchy part in Netflix hit Fair Play. Lottie Lumsden meets a star on the rise.

My mum will be desperate for me to call her after this,’ smiles Phoebe Dynevor. We’re tucked away in a side room at The Savoy Hotel in London just an hour after she was announced as one of the 2024 EE BAFTA Rising Star nominees at a press conference. It is in recognition of her 2023 role in Netflix’s thriller Fair Play. ‘She gets very excited about stuff like this. It means a lot.’

Dynevor’s mother is of course the Coronation Street actress Sally Dynevor. And it’s no wonder she’s proud of her daughter, given what she’s already achieved aged just 28. Dynevor is perhaps best known for her role as Daphne in the Netflix series, Bridgerton. Her storyline with Regé-Jean Page, was one of the things that got us all through the second Lockdown in 2020. Who can forget that spoon scene?

But Dynevor was acting long before, since she was at school and her first role was age 14 in BBC TV drama Waterloo Road. Since then, she’s had roles in everything from Dickensian, to the The Colour Room as well as a guest appearance in Ten Percent, the British TV series based on the French Call My Agent.`

But it is her role in Fair Play opposite Alden Ehnreneich, about an American couple whose relationship begins to unravel when one of them is promoted at a hedge fund firm, that has caught both critics’ and the world’s attention. The film, directed by Chloe Domont, got such an incredible reaction at last year’s Sundance Festival in Utah, that it launched a huge bidding war, with Netflix reportedly buying it for $20 million. ‘Being in that premiere and seeing people’s reactions was so special,’ says Dynevor. ‘People were gasping and saying, ‘Go girl!’ Alden turned to me and said, ‘let’s enjoy this moment because it doesn’t happen very often.’

Eight things you need to know about Phoebe Dynevor…

She has been acting since she was 11

‘I didn’t get success overnight. It seems that way with Bridgerton but it’s been a really long journey to get here and that’s what makes the BAFTA nomination all the more gratifying. I did drama at school and auditioned for a film, The Golden Compass, when I was 11. I didn’t get the role, but I enjoyed the experience and wanted to keep going. My second audition was for a BBC drama TV series called Waterloo Road, and I got that.’
